Medicinal Cannabis Questionaire

Are You Eligible for a Medicinal Cannabis Prescription?

Medicinal cannabis can be a suitable option for some patients, but eligibility is determined by several important factors. Below is a simple checklist to help you understand whether you might qualify under current TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) guidelines in Australia.

1. Are you over the age of 18?

  • Yes → You may be eligible to see an Authorised Prescriber to determine if medicinal cannabis is suitable for your condition.

  • No → Patients under 18 are not typically eligible in a standard setting. However, you may qualify if assessed by a paediatric specialist with expertise in this area.

2. Have you spoken with your regular GP or another specialist about your condition, which has lasted more than 3 months?

Examples of qualifying conditions: chronic pain, migraines, anxiety, insomnia, depression, etc.

  • Yes → Proceed to the next question.

  • No → TGA guidelines recommend trying conventional treatments first. Please consult your healthcare provider for further options.

Note: The TGA requires that the condition has lasted for more than 3 months, and that other treatment options have either failed to help or caused undesirable side effects.

3. Are you pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding?

  • Yes → Medicinal cannabis may not be recommended. Risks and benefits must be carefully assessed with your healthcare provider.

  • No → You may be eligible.

4. Do you have a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder (Type 1 or 2)?

  • Yes → Medicinal cannabis is not recommended in this case. Please consult your healthcare provider.

  • No → You may be eligible.

5. Do you have a history of unstable cardiovascular disease, such as angina or myocardial infarction (heart attack)?

  • Yes → Medicinal cannabis is not recommended for patients with cardiovascular conditions.

  • No → You may be eligible.
